LESSON 4  To the Land of the Peter Rabbit(本文シート)   配布日( )

PART 1

1st of August/From Makoto to Paula/

Paula,

I've seen a lot around London in one week.

Tomorrow I'll leave for the Lake District.  I asked the hotel clerk to give me the name of a good

hotel there.  Then I made a reservation by phone.

I'm going to the Lake District because it is the home of Peter Rabbit.  I've loved the stories of Peter and his friends since I was a child.  I want to see their home with my own eyes.

  Looking forward to your reply.

Makoto

2nd of August/From Paula to Makoto/

Makoto,

I visited England several years ago.  I enjoyed London a lot, but I missed the chance to go to the Lake District.  I hope you'll have a good time there.

I hear the weather in that area is very changeable, so be sure to take an umbrella with you.  Say hello to Peter for me when you see him!

  Take care.

PART 2

2nd of August/From Makoto to Paula/

Paula, Unicorn 4−1@

This morning I took an InterCity train north toward Edinburgh.  The train left Euston Station at 9:30.  The train was almost full.  I was lucky because I found a seat.

I sat next to an English girl whose name was Beth.  Soon she and I became friends.  We talked a lot and we exchanged e-mail addresses before I said good-bye to her at Oxenholme.

From Oxenholme I took a local line to Windermere.  I arrived there about 1:30 and took a bus which was going to Bowness, near Lake Windermere.  My hotel is about one kilometer from Bowness.

This country hotel is small and cozy.  I can see beautiful green hills and the lake out my window.

  Till tomorrow.

Makoto

3rd of August/From Paula to Makoto/

Makoto,

I was surfing the Internet last night.  There were some pretty pictures of Hill Top and the Lake District.  I must go there some day.  Have fun!

Paula

PART 3

3rd of August/From Makoto to Paula/

Paula,

This morning after breakfast, I walked to the ferry near Bowness.  The ferry took me across the lake and I walked up the road through the beautiful hills.

After about 20 minutes, I left the road and walked across the wide, green fields.  The air was clean and cool. Unicorn 4−1A

At Hill Top the house and its surroundings are kept just as they were when Beatrix Potter wrote her stories nearly 100 years ago.  Everything I saw, a bush or a tree, looked just like in her books.  When I looked at the house, Tom Kitten was walking out the front door!  In the gift shop, I bought a Peter Rabbit cup for my sister and a bag for my mother.  I'll send you one of the lovely cards I bought there.  I hope you'll like it.

I had shepherd's pie for lunch in a village pub.  It was delicious.

PART 4

After dinner at my hotel, most of the people stayed in the dining room to drink tea.  The atmosphere was warm and friendly.  We talked about things such as Beatrix Potter and her stories.

I asked the owner of the hotel, "How has Potter's house and the Lake District been protected so well for so many years?"  He told me all about the National Trust a private organization to protect places of historic interest or natural beauty in Britain.  One thing I found interesting was the Trust's motto, "One pound from a million people rather than a million pounds from one."  He told me that Potter bought a lot of land and left all of it to the Trust.  But she asked the Trust to keep the land just as it was when she gave it.  Potter was a great woman, wasn't she?

Looking forward to seeing you in September.

Makoto

5th of August/From Paula to Makoto/

Makoto,

When you return, you can tell the class about the Lake District.  Protecting the environment is the topic for the next lesson.  Have a safe trip back home!

PART 4
